Essay on Discipline

Discipline is essential in leading a happy and successful life. In the absence of discipline, we cannot live a life filled with positive energy and restraint. In our life, we cannot go haywire and make chaotic decisions because, without any uniformity in our decision-making process, we may fail to fully utilize our potential. Discipline is everything that makes us do the right thing. It helps in differentiating between good and evil. It comprises various forms and each form deals with some or other important aspect of our lives. In this essay, we shall explore what discipline actually is and why it is necessary for our lives.

Discipline is essentially subjugation of base desires and is generally understood to incorporate elements of control and restraint. It can be a form of motivation as well. Discipline is when a person makes use of reasoning for the determination of the best possible course of action irrespective of his desires, which might be contrary to what he wants. It is a value that makes a person adhere to a certain Code that applies reasoning and logical in the determination of the best action. It is one value that is dear to the entire process of human development.

The word ‘Discipline’ is an umbrella term and comprises various forms dealing with different aspects of life. We shall deal with four kinds of discipline for our discussion, though there might be other types as well. These four kinds of disciplines are, namely: Domestic Discipline, School Discipline, Positive Discipline, and Child Discipline.

  • Domestic Discipline is that kind in which discipline is exercised between two consenting adults or between an adult and a child. This category, however, comprises other sub-categories that may not necessarily be accepted universally, for example, corporal punishment at home in the form of slapping or spanking of a child or domestic violence, which a few societies regard as a form of discipline that a husband exercises over his wife.
  • School Discipline is a definite set of actions taken by a teacher when a student disturbs the on-going educational activity or creates a ruckus or breaks a rule established by the school. By this, the child is taught to limit his actions and learn to take care of himself/herself in an acceptable manner. The purpose of school discipline is to make the student obedient and observant of rules and codes established by the school. These rules include standards for clothing, timely arrival at school, completion of homework on time, etc.
  • To exercise discipline on students, the teacher may verbally or physically punish them, though the latter form of punishment is largely reprimanded. Such discipline has to exercise strategically and should be based on proper appreciation of many things such as respect for the dignity of students, ability to differentiate between student-oriented and teacher-oriented problems; understanding the causes of unruly behavior and coming up with solutions to change it; dissemination of positive educational philosophy to students, etc. Such approach is necessary keeping in mind that unreasonably stringent imposition of discipline may have fatal consequences.
  • Child Discipline is a comparatively broad category. It covers all the methods required to abstain children from indulging in unruly behavior in future. It essentially covers methods used by parents to control their children. Such methods can be guidelines, principles, and expectations and are imparted on a routine basis. If the child remains compliant with the rules and regulations so imposed, he is awarded. The entire purpose of child discipline is to ensure entrenchment of desirable values and habits in children. Child Discipline is related to parenting, religious perspectives, and professional practices of developmental psychology, behavior analysis, and social work.
  • Positive Discipline is basically a model utilized by schools as well as in parenting that is directed towards the positive development of behavioral patterns in children. It is premised on the idea that there are no bad children; there are only bad and good behaviors. The model tries to strengthen good behaviors while weakening bad behaviors without verbally or physically punishing the child. This is done through positive interaction with children in which parents and teachers attempt to strike a friendly relationship with children so as to foster building up of the latter’s confidence and trust. Positive Discipline is very different from negative discipline, in which the children are dealt with through aggressive measures that may have a negative impact on children.

Let us sum up the importance of discipline in a few points:

  • It helps in the development of a positive personality, which is more appealing and compatible with the society.
  • Discipline is essential in restraining oneself from engaging in unwarranted activities, which may pose harmful effects on life.
  • It helps a person lead a stable, organized, and principled life, leading him to make rational decisions and handle situations logically.
  • It prevents the emergence of anti-social behavior, which if uncontrolled can give way to criminal dispositions.
  • Discipline draws a line between good and bad.
