Essay on Adventure
We all crave for adventures. It is a natural tendency of human beings to seek out new and different things in life; things and experiences that they have never experienced before and are capable of giving mixtures of emotions. It is because of the emotional satisfaction one obtains from adventures that we tend to seek more and more in our lives. But, do we really understand what adventure is? Well, the hackneyed use of the term ‘adventure’ often presents it in varied forms. Let us find out whether the adventure is what believed it to be or it is something else.
Adventure refers to an unusual or exciting experience. It may be characterized by daunting undertakings, which may not necessarily have desired outcomes. Adventures may include activities that pose potential physical danger like exploring, traveling, mountain climbing, skydiving, river rafting, scuba diving or extreme sports. The term is generally used to refer to an enterprise, which involves some sort of financial, psychological or physical risk such as a business venture or any other major undertaking such as going on a road trip alone. There are various forms of adventure, although we make use of adventure in a figurative sense quite often.
The key question in the understanding adventure is what motivates us to take on an adventurous task. As mentioned above, it causes emotional satisfaction or in more technical terminology, psychological arousal. These psychological arousals may be negative or positive in nature. When they are negative in nature, they usually take up the form of fear or nervousness whereas when they are positive in nature, they are in the form of thrill or excitement.
For many people, adventure is the main aim in life. According to the famous adventurer named Andre Malraux, a man who does not engage in adventure lacks dignity. This has been stated in his La Condition Humaine. Helen Keller famously stated that life is either about taking risks or nothing. Thus, want of adventure in one’s life can be the subject of disappointment to many. This idea about adventure may or may not have serious psychological consequences, depending upon the degree of our need of adventure and thrill.
Adventure activities generally happen outdoors. They are often undertaken for excitement or recreation such as adventure tourism and adventure racing. The former is a kind of tourism that involves travel or exploration with risks and requires skills and physical efforts. Generally, adventure travel includes a physical activity, connection with nature and cultural exchange. People often prefer adventure tourism because it helps in achieving psychological states that are defined by flow or rush. Adventure tourism may involve activities such as bungee jumping, canoeing, kayaking, mountaineering, navigating, mountain biking, trekking, etc.
The latter, on the other hand, involves navigation in unexplored or remote areas with races going for two hours to even two weeks. Many races are solo competitions. It involves activities such as paddling, mountain biking, and trekking, horse riding, white water rafting, abseiling, etc. There is no uniform time allotment that is it is up to the racers to decide when to take a break or when to resume. Adventure racing is popularly known as expedition racing. Then, there is adventure education.
Adventure education refers to the promotion of learning by means of activities that are adventurous in nature. These activities include outdoor sports, races, indoor activities, or challenge courses. It is related to adventure therapy, adventure programming, and outdoor education and is essentially an active process of learning, requiring active participation from the learners and teachers. The aim of adventure education is to ensure use of all five senses to improve learning experiences and human performance.
Adventure is a popular genre of books and other literary and artistic works. Some of the oldest stores across the globe involve heavy use of adventures such as the famed Epic, The Odyssey. Similarly, many would be aware of the adventures of Sindbad the Sailor or the Hercules. In late middle ages, the knight errant was a form that adventurous characters took in books. Let us take up Hercules and understand what kind of adventures he had undertaken, which made him famous.
Hera, the wife of Zeus (one of the most powerful Gods in Greek mythology), drove Hercules (who was Zeus’ son), mad, making him kill his own children. To pay for his deeds, he was required to do 12 labors, which were placed by his enemy called Euystheus. If Hercules managed to do all the 12 labors, he would have freed himself from pain. Hercules did and accomplished the following tasks:
- The first task was to slay the Nemean Lion, which was a creature made of golden fur. It could not be killed by a mortal.
- The second task was to kill Hydra, which had nine heads.
- The third task was to capture the Golden Hind (a deer) of Artemis (a Greek Goddess of purity).
- The fourth task was to capture the wild Erymanthian Boar.
- The fifth task was to clean the stables of Augean in one day.
- The sixth task was to kill the Stymphylian
- The seventh task was to capture the Cretan Bull.
- The eighth task was to capture the Mares of Diomedes.
- The ninth task was to attain the girdle of the Queen of Amazons, Hippolyta.
- The tenth task was to attain the cattle of Geryon, a monster.
- The eleventh task was to steal the apples of Hesperides.
- The final twelfth task was to bring back Cerberus.
Now it is not important that you understand Greek mythology, what is necessary is that you appreciate the long understood nature of the adventure. Adventure is ought to be risky and this is what many ancient tales tell us about.
Adventure is important. Everyone needs it but the aim may be different. Some people want an adventure for fun; some want it for learning. Some think that adventure makes you stronger and more confident; some think it is a way to relieve yourself from stresses of life. Whatever your understanding may be, adventure remains to be unpredictable and exciting. It is something that directly impacts your mind so, over-adventurism is not a good thing.
